Packaged Bees

Image of Packaged Bees

For the third year we have been able to supply successfully packs of bees complete with mated queen. They come in two hive, two kilo packs with two seperately caged queens.

These packages, which are usually available during the first or second week of April, are ideal for increasing stocks or making up for winter losses. They are however only suitable for the serious beekeeper as different handling techniques are necessary.

One purchaser reported having had six supers on each of four hives in that season. Packages generally have greater momentum than other forms of increasing stocks subject of course to correct handling. One great advantage of packaged bees is that they are able to be put easily on any hive system.

New Zealand Queens

Image of New Zealand Queens

The queen bees now supplied from New Zealand are said to originally come from stock taken from the United Kingdom.

New Zealand queens are only available in the spring and due to their docility and gentle nature they are particularly suitable for beginners and those who keep their Bees in suburban locations. Confrontations with neighbours can be minimised when a Beekeeper has New Zealand type bees.

With changes in the weather now experienced, the introduction of a new queen can now take place in early April and in good time for a nucleus or newly requeened colony to produce a honey surplus. Regular requeening will minimise the risk of swarming and possible annoyance to the neighbours.

Orders placed in January and February can be supplied in early April. To order queens from us, or to receive our catalogue, contact us via e-mail, phone or post
